Add sales tax — or take it back out of a total

Both directions, with built-in statewide base rates for all 50 states + DC. Nothing is submitted anywhere.

🔒 Pro: discounts & itemized totals

Pro applies a discount, taxes itemized lists line by line, and totals everything.

How the sales tax math works

  1. Add tax — total = price × (1 + rate). $100 at 7.25% → $107.25.
  2. Remove tax (reverse) — pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate). $107.25 back out to $100.00 with $7.25 tax.
  3. Pick your state — the built-in table fills the statewide base rate; override it with your exact local rate any time.

FAQ

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Divide the total by 1 + the rate as a decimal. A $107.25 receipt at 7.25% contains $100.00 pre-tax and $7.25 tax — the Remove Tax tab does this instantly.

Why doesn't my state's rate match what I pay at checkout?

These are statewide base rates only. Local city/county taxes stack on top — for example, California's combined rates regularly exceed 9%. Enter the exact combined rate for precise math.
